The research question that I will be exploring in this blog is; What are the impacts of excessive use of passive digital technology on children’s physical development during early childhood? This question will help us to look into the fears surrounding digital technology use by children by specifically looking at the impacts of passive technology use (such as watching YouTube) in excessive amounts, and how children’s physical development may be shaped by this. I will be focussing on the early childhood age range (0-6 years old) as this is an age where so much physical development occurs, and where technology is recently becoming more prevalent. In my personal experiences as mentioned in my topic overview, I have known young children (aged around 3-6) who spent the vast majority of their free time watching YouTube and Netflix on their iPads. This is quite troubling to me as the amount of time they were spending passively watching videos seemed excessive to me, and I worry about how this might affect their physical development. As technology becomes more and more prevalent in the modern era, I would like to explore the impacts that excessive use in early childhood may have on one’s physical development.
