(Best Kids Tablet, 2018)
The topic that I have chosen to focus on is the impacts of technology use on children’s physical development. I have chosen this topic because I feel that it is a very relevant concern for parents and educators in 2019. There is so much technology available now to children, more than ever before. While it seems to offer many potential benefits, there is also much fear around negative impacts that technology may have on children’s development. One of the main areas of fear surround physical development, as children spend less time playing outdoors and being active, and more time using technology. I personally spent most of my childhood outdoors, spending every summer at our cottage with no technology access whatsoever. On the flip side, I have some younger cousins today who seem to spend most of their free time inside using their tablets. This worries me as spending hours indoors watching YouTube instead of running around outside does not seem healthy to me. I would like to explore whether or not the fears that exist around technology’s impact on child development are accurate, as well as how parents and educators should act to ensure the best outcomes for children’s physical development in an ever-growing technological world.
